Look Out for These 5 Ingredients in Your Baby Care Products

By Teddyy 18 Apr 2024

What goes on our skin is just as important as what goes in our bodies, and what goes on your baby’s skin is even more important. Their skin is much more delicate and sensitive than ours, and they are prone to irritation and rashes if exposed to the wrong baby skin care products.

But just as not all the products labelled “Natural” are good for you, not all products labelled “Gentle” are good for your baby. Some baby products can contain harmful ingredients and the fact that they hide behind fancy scientific names that belong in a Spelling Bee contest makes it harder for us to avoid them.

In this blog, we have highlighted a highlighted a list of 5 ingredients you should avoid in baby skin care products so you can always provide your baby with the best.

Fragrance

Everybody loves a good-smelling baby; as a result, fragrances are common in baby skin care products. However, fragrances can cause allergic reactions, including breathing problems and rashes. The best baby skin care products should not have the following words anywhere in their pack:

  1. Fragrance
  2. Perfume
  3. Parfum
  4. Aroma

Sometimes, they hide under less obvious, scientific names, such as diethyl phthalate and amyl cinnamal. A simple google search should inform you who’s the hidden imposter.

Parabens

Parabens are used as a preservative in a variety of cosmetic and food products, and they’re very common in products like soaps and shampoos. Apart from being a common source of irritation for your baby, they are also found to cause metabolic, developmental, hormonal, and neurological disruptions in the body as well as various cancer and fertility issues in the long run. They are usually labeled as ‘something-something-parabens’, such as propylparaben and butylparaben.

Sulfates

Sulfates are incredibly good at removing dirt and oil and you’ll often find them in products like shampoo, body wash, soaps, etc. But sulfates can be harsh on sensitive skins and can cause temporary eye, skin, and respiratory irritation – especially if it’s in concentration greater than 2% of the product. Unfortunately, sulfate concentration can range anywhere between 1 to 30%, or even higher!

Even then, since its effects are only temporary, we can’t exactly label it ‘unsafe’. If you notice any redness or itchiness in your baby after a bath time, check their products for sulfate and opt for products labelled ‘sulfate-free’.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

Numerous studies have revealed that babies consume a shocking number of micro-plastics every day. As per these studies, the biggest culprits are baby bottles and canned foods that use BPA. BPA consumption alarmingly increases if the products are heated or scratched. It’s harmful effects? Exposure to BPA is linked with early puberty, and various types of cancers!

To avoid BPA, avoid polycarbonate plastics (marked as ‘PC’) and instead opt for polypropylene products (marked as ‘PP’). You can also go for products labelled “BPA-free”.

DMDM Hydantoin

A relatively inexpensive preservative that effectively prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that could spoil baby products. Unfortunately, this chemical is harmful to babies because it slowly releases formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent and skin irritant.

To avoid this harmful chemical, look out for DMDM Hydantoin in the ingredients, as well as other similar preservatives such as imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15, which also release formaldehyde.

By taking a closer look at the ingredients list and avoiding fragrances, parabens, sulfates, BPA, and DMDM Hydantoin, you can rest easy knowing you’re doing your part to protect your little one. Opting for natural and organic products is another great way to give your baby the care they deserve. So go ahead and spoil your precious bundle of joy but do it with care and caution!
